you can prevent changing ethX interface-named by telling udev which
interface-MAC address has to be renamed to eth0, eth1, ..., ethX
find a file in /etc/udev/rules.d/ named like this:

NN-persistent-net.rules

in my case (debian-lenny) it is:

70-persistent-net.rules
